The Lima Police Department has confirmed that 14-year-old Kenny Schultheis, a student at Elida Local Schools, was the victim of a fatal shooting late Tuesday night.

At approximately 10:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of North Baxter Street following reports of shots being fired into a residence. Investigators say multiple rounds were fired through a ground-floor window, striking Schultheis.

Emergency medical personnel transported the teen to St. Rita’s Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Witnesses described the suspect as a tall, thin Black male wearing a white T-shirt, last seen fleeing northbound on foot between houses. The investigation remains active, with detectives reviewing neighborhood surveillance footage and pursuing leads. Schultheis, who was set to begin his junior year at Elida High School, was a member of the school’s football team. He previously attended Shawnee Middle School, where he played football and wrestled under Coach Nathan Kreider.

“Kenny was a great kid, always upbeat and positive,” Coach Kreider said in a statement shared by Shawnee Youth Wrestling. “My prayers go out to his family, friends, and community.”

Elida Local Schools expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “Our hearts and our prayers go out to his family, friends, teammates, and other loved ones at this time,” the district said. Counseling services are being made available to students and staff impacted by the tragedy.
