On Tuesday, August 12, at around 4:21 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a serious crash near 40 Avenue and 22 Street involving a stolen vehicle.
According to police, the driver of the stolen vehicle fled the scene by taking another vehicle from a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help. The suspect was then involved in a second collision before fleeing on foot. RCMP officers quickly apprehended him.
The first crash claimed the life of 46-year-old Red Deer resident Shelley Thornton. The RCMP have offered their condolences to her family and friends.

The suspect, 33-year-old Ryan Allan Bell of Red Deer County, is facing multiple charges, including
- Impaired driving causing fatality
- Dangerous driving causing fatality
- Criminal negligence causing fatality
- Failing to stop after an accident causing fatality
- Two counts of motor vehicle theft
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Break and enter (residence)
Following a judicial interim release hearing, Bell was remanded into custody. He is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on Wednesday, August 20.
